QA 233 (Basic Business Statistics)

Practice Problems I - Chapter 1

Hello QA 233 students! The following problems require you to use material from 'Introduction to Data and Statistics' (slide set #1 and chapter 1 in the ASW textbook). I have also posted the solutions on the QA 233 Virtual Classroom web page. Have a good day.

Suppose that the manager of a fast food restaurant has collected the following data from fifty-three randomly selected customers: Size of Soft-Drink Ordered (small, medium, or large), Method of Payment (cash, check, money order, etc.), Size of Check (i.e., Amount Spent on Food), Size of Tip, Time Spent Waiting to Order, and Number of Diners on the Check.

  1. Has the manager collected a census or a sample? Please explain.

  1.  How many observations has the manager collected?

  1.  On how many variables has the manager collected data?

  1. At what level is each variable measured? What are the ramifications (i.e., how does this limit what you can do analytically with each variable)?

  1. Is this data time-series or cross-sectional in nature? Why?

  1. Have these data been collected observationally or experimentally? Explain why?

  1. From what population has this data been collected?
