A Typical Second Year for a Marketing Doctoral Student

 

 

Fall Quarter

            Classes:            

                                   MKTG 615 - Seminar in Marketing (Structural Equation Modeling)

           MKTG 620 - Advanced Topics in Marketing Management

           BUSN 610 - Current Topics in Research

 

Now that you are starting you second year in the doctoral program, you finally feel like a real doctoral student.  The first year is a blur and here comes the second year.  MKTG 615 plunges you into structural equation modeling (SEM).  Your first year of research methods classes is put to work.  MKTG 620 will immerse you in the subjects areas of product and place.  You will read journal articles containing seminal information and cutting edge information from each area.  BUSN 610 is taken again with different topics from the first year.  It continues to introduce you to and familiarize you with the academic environment. 

 

 

Winter Quarter

            Classes:           

                                    MKTG 610 - Seminar in Marketing Management (Price and Promotion)

                                    Minor Class

 

MKTG 610 will surround you with journal readings from price and promotion.  Again, you will read journal articles containing seminal information and cutting edge information from each area.  This is also the time you will take your first minor class.  Minors are selected by the student in consultation with faculty.

 

 

Spring Quarter

            Classes:          

                                    MKTG 602 - Research Methods II

                                    MKTG 637 - Seminar in Buyer Behavior

 

MKTG 602 picks-up where MKTG 601 left off.  You will be collecting data, analyzing data using univariate and multivariate techniques, and learning how to report results of the analysis.  MKTG 637 wraps-up your marketing seminars with a plethora of consumer behavior journal readings.  You are now at the end of your second year!  Congratulations!  You are now ready to take your marketing comprehensive exam. 

 

WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?


At the beginning of the third year, students sit for the marketing comprehensive exam.  After that, students complete minor classes, work on research with faculty, and begin work on their dissertation.  Two major steps during the dissertation are the dissertation proposal and the dissertation defense.  The dissertation is completed during the fourth year and you graduate.  


At graduation, you will be hooded by your dissertation chair and the Dean of the College of Business and then announced to the audience by the Dean of the Graduate School: 


"Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you Dr. _____   _____."
