A Typical First Year for a New Marketing Doctoral Student

Fall Quarter

            Classes:            

                                    MKTG 640 - Marketing Theory

            QA 622 - Advanced Business Statistics

            BUSN 610 - Current Topics in Research

Your first doctoral classes are marketing theory and regression analysis.  BUSN 610 is to introduce you to and familiarize you with the academic environment.  You will be assigned to work with one or two faculty members as part of your assistantship.  It is paramount that doctoral students work with faculty on research projects.  The faculty strives to foster a mentoring atmosphere with doctoral students to aid the student’s development of their research skills and teaching skills.  The quarter goes by quickly and you will feel overwhelmed at times.  Remember, many have gone before you and had the same feelings.  As they did, you will apply yourself like you never have before and you will succeed.  Once the first quarter is completed, you will begin to feel a sense of accomplishment.

Winter Quarter

            Classes:            

                                    MKTG 600 - Survey of Marketing and Strategy

                                    QA 605 - Methods of Business Research

You now move into marketing strategy and experimental design.  With a completed quarter under your belt, your confidence is starting to build.  You are getting to know the faculty better and now know your way around Tech.  It is our intention that by this time research projects are beginning or underway with faculty, which lead to publications.

Spring Quarter

            Classes:            

                                    MKTG 601 - Research Methods I

                                    QA 610 - Multivariate Statistics: Business Applications

As you can see, the first year creates a solid research foundation.  From this foundation, you will build additional research skills and learn more about topical areas in which you will use those skills.  At the end of MKTG 601 you will have a survey instrument to use in data collection.  This data will be used for analysis in MKTG 602 later in your program.  You are now at the end of your first year!  Congratulations!  You have accomplished something very few people achieve.  You should be proud of yourself and ready to confidently move into your second year.
