Frequently Asked Questions
I am majoring in another college at La. Tech. How can I change my major to CIS?
  • Get an unofficial copy of your transcript from the Registrar's Office in Keeny Hall, and bring it to the MIS office coordinator in CAB 115. The coordinator will evaluate each of the courses you have already taken to determine which courses fit into the CIS curriculum. After the evaluation is made, if you decide to change your major, tell the coordinator so that she can make the change and tell you what to do.
What is the difference in the course work for Computer Science majors and Computer Information Systems majors?
  • Computer Science (CS) majors take more math and engineering courses. They focus on the technical aspects of computing equipment and software. CS focuses more on programming than does CIS. Computer Information Systems (CIS) majors take general business classes to give them an overall picture of the whole business process (business savvy) such as accounting, marketing, management, economics, and finance.
In what order should I take CIS courses?
  • Recommended Completion Order for CIS Courses
Can I take a course at another university and apply it toward my degree at La. Tech?
  • Yes. You should decide what course or courses you would like to take at another university and bring the course name, number, and description to the MIS office coordinator for approval. Be sure you get written "substitution" approval before taking a class at another university.
What CIS courses are offered during the summer quarter?
  • During most summers CIS 110 and CIS 310 are offered. Occasionally CIS 335, 337, or 444 will be offered during the summer. Many CIS faculty use summers to do research or work in the field to remain current on CIS trends and issues; therefore, they are not available for teaching. The MIS office coordinator usually knows by the middle of spring quarter what CIS courses are likely to be taught in the summer.
What are the top journals in the CIS field?
  • MIS Quarterly
  • Journal of MIS
  • Information Systems Research
  • Communications of the ACM
  • Information and Management
  • Decision Support Systems
  • European Journal of Information Systems
What are the objectives for the CIS program?
  • To provide students with a broad-based, entry-level understanding of CIS and its possible career areas.
  • To teach CIS principles conceptually so that they can be understood and applied regardless of the specific software package being used.
  • To help CIS students develop problem-solving skills, including strategic and innovative applications of information technology.
  • To accentuate the necessary skills for successful interfacing with users of computer systems.
