George Cummings, III, College of Business 2008 Alumnus of the Year

George W. Cummings, III currently serves as President and Chief Executive Officer of Progressive Bank.  He has served as President since 2001 and Chief Executive Officer since 1997.  Cummings also serves as Chairman of the Board of Directors of both Progressive Bancorp, Inc. and Progressive Bank.

Cummings is a 1979 Louisiana Tech University graduate with a B. S. degree in Banking and Finance, and is a graduate of the School of Banking of the South at LSU, and The Wharton School’s Strategic Thinking and Management Program at the University of Pennsylvania.  Upon his graduation from Louisiana Tech, Cummings began his banking career with the Bank of the South in Baton Rouge, serving as Assistant Vice President and then Vice President in the Operations area.  In 1982, he moved to Monroe where he served as President and Chief Executive Officer and a member of the Board of Directors of Security Bank.  In 1989, he joined the staff of Capital Bank in Monroe where he served as President and Chief Operating Officer and as a member of the Board of Directors.  From March to April 1997 he served as President of Deposit Guaranty National Bank of Monroe, Louisiana following its acquisition of Capital Bank.

Cummings currently serves on the Chairman’s Council of the Monroe Chamber of Commerce, where he has also served as Chairman and Director; and the Finance and Compensation Committees of the United Way of Northeast Louisiana, where his past service includes Board Chairman, Director, and member of the Katrina Crisis Recovery Task Force for the 211 Call Center. In 2001, Cummings served as Chairman of the United Way Campaign Cabinet which raised in excess of $4.0 million in donor pledges.  He also currently serves as a member of the Louisiana Tech University College of Business Advisory Board. He has previously served as a Director of the Louisiana Tech Foundation and as Monroe Division Chairman for the Centennial Quest for Quality.  He is a member of the Rotary Club of Monroe and of the First United Methodist Church of Monroe where he currently serves on the Finance Committee.  He has also previously served in various roles with the American Heart Association, the Silver Waters (now Pines to the Gulf) Girl Scouts, the Ouachita Valley Council (now Louisiana Purchase Council) Boy Scouts of America, and the Louisiana Bankers Association.  In 1993 and 1994, Cummings served as the Chairman of the Board of the Ouachita Parish Community Working Task Force Empowerment Zone, a community-wide initiative which resulted in the area receiving one of ninety-three Urban Enterprise Community designations and a $3.2 million Federal Grant.  In 2000 he served as the Chairman of the Ouachita Enterprise Community.   He has also served as a Director of the Ouachita Economic Development Corporation, as Co-Chair of the Interim Economic Development Coalition, and as a member of the Working Group on Business Retention and Recruitment for Governor Bobby Jindal’s Transition Team.

During his banking career, Cummings has earned a number of awards including both the Rambin/Silverstein Memorial Civic Award (2002) and the James M. Shipp, Jr. Memorial Young Business Leader of the Year Award (1993) from the Monroe Chamber of Commerce.  In 2004 he was recognized as one of the Top 10 Most Influential Business Leaders in Northeast Louisiana and was also named Chapter Honoree by Louisiana Tech University and the Board of Governors of Beta Gamma Sigma.  In 2005, he received the West Monroe/West Ouachita Chamber of Commerce Leadership & Community Service Award, was recognized as Volunteer of the Year by the Ouachita Economic Development Corporation, and received a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from Congressman Rodney Alexander recognizing his efforts as Co-Chairman of the Interim Ouachita Economic Development Coalition.

Cummings is married to the former Nan Weaver, and is the father of three sons –       George W. Cummings, IV; Brad Cummings; and Ben Cummings.  He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Cummings, Jr. of Winnsboro, LA.
