Distinguished Alumni 1999, Richard A. Lewis

Richard A. Lewis has spent most of his career as an employee relations and human resources professional. He began his career with Murphy Oil Corporation in 1966. Murphy is an international oil and gas company. Mr. Lewis held various marketing and operations positions with Murphy as part of that company's management development program. In 1973, he was named Employee Relations Supervisor at the corporate office and in 1976, became Corporate Manager of Employee Relations.

In 1985, Mr. Lewis was recruited by Anadarko Petroleum Corporation as the Corporate Manager of Employee Relations and Human Resources. His most recent company advancement was in October, 1995 when he was named Vice President of Human Resources. This Houston-based company is one of the nation's largest and most successful independent oil and gas exploration and production companies.

Mr. Lewis was conferred a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Louisiana Tech University in 1966 and completed Northwestern University's Management Program in Petroleum Economics and Management in 1982. Mr. Lewis is currently a member of the Wharton executive Education Advisory Board at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and the Executive Cabinet, College of Business at Louisiana Tech University. He is the former President of the South Arkansas Personnel Association, a member of the American Compensation Association as well as the Society for Human Resource Management. Mr. Lewis is a former instructor for Southern Arkansas University and a member of Scholarship Committees at Louisiana Tech University.

Richard and his wife, Carol, have been married for 31 years and have a daughter, Jessica and a son, Carey. Both children are gifted academically and are accomplished violinists and pianists. Their daughter is a 1997 graduate of Baylor University. She was a violinist with the Baylor University Symphony Orchestra, and a 1993 member of the Texas Allstate Orchestra. She is employed as an English Teacher in the Humble, Texas Independent School District. Their son is a senior at Kingwood High School. He was selected to the Texas Allstate Orchestra for the school years 1995/1996, 1996/1997, and 1997/1998, and recently was selected Concert Master (violin) of the MEA Region XIX Orchestra. He is also the Concert Master of his high school orchestra.

Richard's wife, Carol, was conferred a Bachelor of Science Degree, Magna Cum Laude, in Home Economics from Louisiana Tech University in 1966. Mrs. Lewis is past President of Kingwood/Humble Music Teacher's Association, past member of Louisiana Tech University Alumni Board of Directors, and past President of the Kingwood Orchestra Boosters Association. Mrs. Lewis teaches private piano lessons and has been instrumental in organizing special musical events for the Kingwood/Humble area.
